56History of the World Cup 2010
The entire world is gearing up for the excitement of the upcoming World Cup 2010 games to take place in June in South Africa. Teams from around the world will show up to compete to see which team has the best football players in the entire world! For over eighty years, the World Cup championships have been taking place at some point in the world. The World Cup 2010 games can trace their origins to the success of the Olympic Football Tournament.
The first World Cup happened in Montevideo in 1930. This competition would begin a new era in sporting. The early games had many setbacks and had to deal with problems with certain countries. However, the World Cup was able to get past these problems and began a tradition that continues today with the current World Cup 2010 games to take place June 11 through July 11 of this year.
A great deal of political maneuvering had to be accomplished allow the games the opportunity to be the success that they are today. During the second World Cup games, FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) chose to hold the games in Italy and the organization changed the way the elimination was handled. This lead to some countries (Brazil and Argentina) that had only one chance to compete before having to return home empty handed. This World Cup was the first to be broadcast over the radio and heard in many countries. Italy won the event and plans were made for the next competition to take place in four years.
History of the World Cup 2010 continues
France, home of FIFA, was the next host. More problems for the games continued as some countries did not show for the games (Austria) and others did not wish to compete (Uruguay). France was not able to take the win and Italy maintained control over the World Cup title. World War II led to the next event not taking place as anticipated. Eventually the games were able to get back on track and Brazil hosted the next competition in 1950.
Today, the FIFA World Cup 2010 games is recognized around the globe for its opportunity to allow world-class athletes in the field of football (soccer to you, Americans) to compete. This sporting event, much like the Olympics, brings people from every country together in one arena to show what his or her country's athletes can do. During the games, politics is often forgotten and people have the opportunity to just enjoy the great talents and the wonderful experience that a sporting event can bring to everyone. Even with people looking to root for their countries home teams, people will recognize the great prowess of the many football players and the hard work that each has put into representing their home countries.
